Question REYCS13:

It would be great to know about your traditions, customs, festivals and holidays. What advise would you give to visitors of your country?

Answer from REYCS1

Festivals

In London where we live it is very diverse therefore resulting to different religions and custom festivals. Some festivals are religious and some are a mixture of music from different Genres like T4 on the beach e.g. The Script, Metro Station, The Saturdays and NDUBZ. Events like these are really popular because they are well advertised and have music for everyone. There is also a festival that is at Glastonbury every year, they usually would have rock/indie bands but made an exception last year with well known rapper Jay-Z. Kings of Leon, Panic At The Disco, MGMT and The Ting Tings were all playing at Glastonbury.  Notting Hill Carnival in west London has been going every year from 1966. It is the largest carnival in Europe. Every year the streets of West London come alive, with the sounds and smells of Caribbean culture. There are over 40,000 volunteers and over 1 million Carnival revellers. Diwali is a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and is an official holiday in India. Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali also known as the Festival of Lights for 5 days in a row. The Festival of Life in London started in 1996 and is by the Redeemed Christian Church of God and supported by over 150 churches in the United Kingdom.

Religion

Different religions have their own festivals e.g. Christians will all celebrate Christmas and Easter for the birth and death of Jesus, many people would celebrate because England is a Christian country. In Islam Eid Mubarak is reserved for the festival Eid ul-Fitr it means “Blessed Festival” Eid lasts 4 days. Ramadan is an Islamic event where at the time the nine month was revealed to the prophet Mohammed Muslims would fast. They will not eat or drink until sunset.  In Judaism Yom Kippur is the most important and sombre festival because it symbolizes atonement and repentance which results in 25 hour fasting and prayer. Passover is also a Jewish  holy day and festival which commemorates the time the Hebrews escape from enslavement in Egypt.

Some thing that is important and we would like to share with you is our celebration of 14th of February. It is not our St. Valentines! We are celebrating St. Triphun who is the guardian of the grapes. At that day, people are starting to prepare the grapeyards for following season. They are drinking wine or rakija (our local, usually home produced, very strong alcohol drink). We are not giving any gifts at that day, but are gathering with families, telling stories and having fun. This is ancient macedonian tradition. Nowadays youth are also celebrating St. Valentine, but we are not forgetting our local festive too.

There is one more interesting tradition we would like to share with you: the famous wedding at Galichnik (name of one village in Macedonia). This is a real wedding that takes place in a small village in the mountains near the western Macedonian ski resort of Mavrovo. Couples apply from all over Macedonia to be the bride and groom, but preference is given to those who have rouths from that area. Sometimes there are hundreds of couples that are getting married in the same day in the same place. The interesting is that the wedding is done in the style of old time traditional weddings, with a lot of old customs, folklore music and dance. The bride's costume weights 30 kilos! [It's held in mid-July! imagine how the bride is feeling!]

My advice for the visitors of our country is that they have to visit one of the most important region from our country - The Muddy Volcanos .The muddy volcanos are unique in Europe. These muddy volcanoes are very interesting by their chemical point of view ,although they have a small diameter, they are very deep.
Something about our tradition: we keep the popular tradition , our national costumes.
We have our valentines, the dragobets on february 24th.
The golden deer is a music festival that is held every year.
This is my advice for the tourists. I hope you will enjoy yourself in our country.

Other schools from Slovenia have already written so much about festivals and they are really a thing to see in Slovenia. We would only like to mention one festival that is going on in our village Vitanje, and that is Holcerija. It's not so big as the others but we like it because all the villagers come together to dance and have some fun. Otherwise there are more festivals going on in a nearby town called Slovenske Konjice.

What advice would we give to a visitor? He should definitely see the natural beauties, he should take a hike to the mountains, then go and take a swim in our see, then visit our caves, castles, etc.

Here is a power point presentation about some of our famous carnivals!

The one place a visitor must see is Bled. There he could eat traditional desert called kremšnita or some also famous ice cream. Then you should go with a boat on the small island in the middle of the lake in Bled. There you can see very old and nice church. We also recommend coming here in summer, because you can swim in the lake too. But on the other hand you can ski in winter.

Almost all students described Shrovetide because this was the last holiday in Slovenia.

The following research was made by Milena.

My favourite holidays are Christmas (1) and'pust' which is a holiday like the English Shrovetide (2).

1. Because I am an Orthodox Christian we have Christmas on 7th of January.

2. We celebrate Shrovetide in different months. Shrovetide is usuallyMarch. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring.

1. I' ve told you that I am an Orthodox Christian, so here is a short presentation of the Orthodox Christmas. Just like we celebrate it at home.

On Christmas day people celebrate the birth of Jesus, who was born on this day. First, people greet another person by saying "Hristus se rodi" (Jesus was born) and than the other person answers "Vaistino se rodi" (Indeed He was born).

Orthodox Christians raise some straw and a branch of oak at home. Parents hide some candy in the straw and then children look for the candy.

On 6th of January in the evening, Orthodox Christians go to church. Around midnight a priest starts reading the holly mass. After the mass, people who work in the church, start giving "badnjak" to people. This is a bunch of straw and a couple of twigs of oak. "Badnjak" has a ribbon with red, white and blue stripes.

On 7th of January, on Christmas day- mums bake Christmas bread in which they hide a coin.

Forty days before the Orthodox Christmas, people have a fast, but a lot of people have a fast just the last week before Christmas.

Christmas lunch looks like this. All family members sit together by the table. Father reads a prayer and then they light a candle. Before they sit at the table, they tear up the bread in which there is a hidden coin. A member of the family who gets the coin in his or her piece of bread, is said to have a lot of money during the whole following year, but he or she can not spend it until next Christmas. Christmas lunch contains soup, pasta or potatoes, meat and salad. At the end there is a dessert, too.

2. People dress up in masks and costumes and in villages there are carnivals. In our village, Naklo, there is a carnival, too. People wearing masks walk from house to house and  there they get candy, doughnuts or money. The most popular food during this festival are doughnuts.

Milena’s advice for visitors: You must go to Bled and you must come to our village, because the people in Naklo and in Bled are very nice. You must go to the ski flying hill in Planica. You must go to Prekmurje and there you will eat Prekmurska gibanica, a delicious dessert. The link is for the recipe!

Jaka's advice to visitors: I think that for the visitors it is best that they visit the Slovenian natural beauties. It is not so interesting to go to Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia) or other cities. It is better to go to the highest mountain Triglav, to the waterfall Savica or to the Postojna cave. But it is also interesting to see the historical places like old castles, museums or monuments.

Gašper's advice: I advise them, that our country is very beautiful and if they want to relax, Slovenia is the right place for them. We have some good traditional food, and a lot of museums and things like that. They can go in the mountains, on the island in lake Bled with a wishing bell in the church on the island, or visit one of our beautiful caves: Postojna, Škocjan, Pekel, etc.

Traditions:

In The Netherlands we’ve got some traditions. We celebrate the day for our mother and so we have one too for our father. You give them a present to spoil them. We also have Sinterklaas. It’s a feast where young children believe in. Sinterklaas brings them presents with his horse and friends. Hos birthday is on the 5th of decembre. On that evening you’re with friends or family and you get presents. It’s nice! Also there are many feasts for your religion. This is for every person on his own.

Holidays:

Everyone likes the holidays. We have lots of holidays. We like the summer holiday most. It has oft nice weather and it’s the longest holiday of all.

Advise for visitors:

-         Het Achterhuis: Anne Frank has hid herself here in the 2th world war.

-         Madame Toussouds: You can see here a lot of famous people. But they aren’t real!

-         Kinderdijk: Here are a hundred of mills. It’s nice to walk and look around.

-         Keukenhof: Here are gigantic flower ball fields.

Answer from REYCS13

Latvia is rich in traditions and customs. But we think the most interesting for the visitors is Janu-Ligo holiday (the summer solstice day, the shortest night of the year and the longest day of the year). The origin of the holiday goes back to the pagon times when our ancestors gathered together to celebrate the holiday and greet the Sun in the morning "Ligo! Ligo!". The people nowadays get ready for the celebration long before. They buy special food for the night feast: cheese (Jāņu cheese with caraway seeds), beer (one of the most popular drinks during the feast), backon, rye bread, pies. They make or buy oak tree wreaths to put them on Janis's head ( On the 24th of June every man named Janis celebrate his name day. ) Young couples go to the wood at night to look for the fern flowers. Before and while celebration people make fires and jump over them...
